Information visualization
In the range of things that can be considered information design, the field of information visualization is a very interesting area. It's kind of like info graphics (a la USA Today -- or Tufte) on steroids. Anyways, Bob Jacobson (who edited ) forwarded this article from the Economist to the experiencedesign list: Grokking the infoviz If Google is God, then information visualization surely has the potential of being at least a minor deity.
