Hourly wages

Over on today's Daily Report from Zeldman, he announced the availability of royalty-free stock icons for web developers (they're nice). But in his praise of them, he notes that at "US $350 per collection, they cost less than two hours of a graphic designers time."

I don't know about you folks, but we're not paying $175 per hour for graphic design. So...typo? Or something I'm just completely missing? (Is NYC that expensive?)

Comments

Ten years ago the American Institute of Graphic Arts found in a survey that $150/hour was the "average" rate charged by graphic designers.

That's ten years ago. It's probably gone up some.

You may not charge enough for your work! ;)

I think tops would be $70/hour...and in central Virginia, it's more like $35!

At a significant agency, $175/hour for an art director is not unheard of at all. It's not a matter of price, it's a matter of value.
