IDblog ... an information design weblog

MoveOn.org

I interrupt this regularly scheduled discussion of information design topics to ask IDblog readers who are US-based (or not, I guess!) to consider supporting the MoveOn.org Voter Fund. If you're like me, you're probably a bit discouraged (if not frightened) by recent Bush administration moves. The right is working incredibly hard to discredit MoveOn.org, which tells me that this is exactly the group to support to avoid having four more years of W.

Thanks for your consideration. I now return you to your regularly scheduled IDblog.

Update: Even if you're not into MoveOn's politics, this site--FactCheck.org--from the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania--may be well worth a bookmark. Their goal is to "reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics." Too bad they aren't looking for donations!

Has anyone been reading about election machinery (touch screen machines that leave no auditable paper trail)? Whether it be Krugman or Schwartz in NYTimes, or Michael I. Niman of the Humanist, the news is disturbing. I knew there was something fishy about Max Cleland's upset defeat in Georgia, when the state had totally replaced their machinery by
Diebold. But I hadn't realized that Chuck Hagel R, Nebraska was head of E. S.& S/A.I.S. the largest election machinery company, before he "won" . It's spooky. Obviously the formula for Republicans is Money + Wedge Issue + Machinery 9the corporation that owns the machine, counts the votes. That's outsourcing our votes.

Emily,

There are a lot of people following, or working on various aspects of, the question of how e-voting can or should work.

If you are concerned about the lack of a paper trail on electronic machines, you should visit the Verified Voting organization. www.verifiedvoting.org.

For a good collection of information, links and a discussion list on the human side of voting systems, the UPA Voting and Usability project is a good place to start http://www.usabilityprofessionals.org/upa_projects/voting_and_usability/
(Disclaimer: I have been the head of this project since its beginning 3.5 years ago.

In every case where both presidential candidates were shown simultaneously in the first debate Fox News cameras showed Bush closer (larger), presumably to make Bush look as tall as Kerry.

Why isn't this election fraud?
