Severe Weather Alert? Not!

What's up with the National Weather Service? Lately some of their Severe Weather Alerts (which I see on weather.com) have been questionable. I realize I live in DC (where I joke that people start having accidents when the humidity goes above 80%), but last week we got a severe weather alert for light rain, and this week it's for nuisance winds:

Severe Weather Alert from the National Weather Service

... GUSTY WINDS EXPECTED DURING THE AFTERNOON...

DURING THE HEATING OF THE AFTERNOON... GUSTY WINDS ARE FORECAST TO MIX DOWN TO THE SURFACE. WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO GUST TO 35 MPH ACROSS CENTRAL VIRGINIA AND LOWER SOUTHERN MARYLAND... AND TO 40 MPH ACROSS EASTERN WEST VIRGINIA... WESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL MARYLAND... NORTHERN VIRGINIA... AND WASHINGTON DC BETWEEN MIDDAY AND SUNSET.

THESE WINDS MAY BE ENOUGH TO CAUSE NUISANCE PROBLEMS... SUCH AS BLOWING LIGHT OUTDOOR OBJECTS AROUND... BUT SHOULD NOT CAUSE ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS....

Winds that "may be enough to cause nuisance problems...but should not cause any major problems" do not justify a severe weather alert. I think the NWS can use some help from some IAs to deal with categorizing and labeling!

After seeing Bowling for Columbine I started to see this kind of thing as a component of our inflated level of fear. It's easy to find millions of ways that we're told to be afraid. The local news ("Your tap water could be KILLING you and your CHILDREN! Tonight at 11.") and weather (our weather people are even called Storm Team 11) are a huge impact. Then there are the forwarded emails from my father describing (phony, it turns out) carjackings, computer viruses, illnesses... Ugh. How do you maintain a healthy fear-free life these days?

While I agree that fearmongering has been ahuge post-9/11 pastime, not to mention Columbine, the wind advisory is important for those of us who drive motorcycles. I appreciate it. Perhaps though they could have categorized messages:
Weather Notice -- Get your plants & pets inside
Weather Alert -- high winds
Severe Weather Alert -- dangerously high winds or cold weather or snow
Severe Weather Warning -- tornado watches/warnings, hurricanes, fires, locusts....
